Expert Review

Design

The Pixel 6 introduced Google's bold horizontal camera bar and a two-tone glass design. Gorilla Glass Victus protects the front, Gorilla Glass 6 covers the back and the aluminum frame gives the phone a premium feel. At 207 grams, it is relatively heavy.

Display

The 6.4-inch OLED display has a 2400 x 1080 resolution, HDR support and a 90Hz refresh rate. It provides deep contrast and smooth scrolling, although newer mid-range phones offer brighter 120Hz panels.

Performance

Google Tensor remains responsive for messaging, photography, navigation and everyday multitasking. Its machine-learning capabilities support Pixel-exclusive features, but performance and efficiency fall behind newer flagship chips.

Gaming

The Mali-G78 GPU can run popular mobile games at reasonable settings. Long gaming sessions may expose the first-generation Tensor chip's thermal limitations and lead to inconsistent sustained performance.

Camera

The 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization is the Pixel 6's strongest feature. Google's HDR processing, Night Sight, Real Tone, Magic Eraser and Face Unblur produce dependable images. The 12MP ultra-wide camera is useful, but there is no telephoto lens.

Battery

The 4,614mAh typical battery generally supports a day of moderate use, but mobile data, navigation and camera use can reduce endurance. USB Power Delivery PPS charging, Qi wireless charging and Battery Share are supported.

Software

The Pixel 6 launched with Android 12 and receives Google's direct software experience. Google now lists it for five years of updates from its original US availability, meaning buyers should consider the limited remaining support period.

Ai

The original Tensor chip enables features such as on-device speech recognition, Live Translate, Recorder transcription, Call Screen and computational photography. It lacks many newer generative AI capabilities available on recent Pixel models.

Connectivity

The Pixel 6 supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, GPS, eSIM and USB-C. Network support varies by model and carrier, especially for mmWave 5G.

Pros

  • Excellent main camera
  • Clean Google Android experience
  • Distinctive premium design
  • 90Hz OLED display
  • Qi wireless charging
  • IP68 water resistance
  • Titan M2 security

Cons

  • Limited remaining update period
  • Inconsistent battery efficiency
  • Can run warm under heavy use
  • Slow charging by modern standards
  • No telephoto camera
  • Heavy body
The Google Pixel 6 introduced Google's custom Tensor platform and established the design language used by later Pixel phones. Its 6.4-inch FHD+ OLED display supports a 90Hz refresh rate, HDR and an always-on display. The first-generation Google Tensor chip prioritizes machine learning, speech processing and computational photography while providing smooth everyday performance. The rear camera system includes a 50MP wide camera with optical image stabilization and a 12MP ultra-wide camera, supported by features such as Night Sight, Magic Eraser, Face Unblur and Real Tone. The 4,614mAh typical battery supports USB Power Delivery PPS fast charging, Qi wireless charging and Battery Share reverse wireless charging. Gorilla Glass Victus protects the front, Gorilla Glass 6 covers the rear and the device carries an IP68 water and dust resistance rating. Google originally launched the phone with Android 12 and now lists the Pixel 6 among devices receiving five years of updates from its initial US availability.

Verdict

The Google Pixel 6 remains appealing for its camera quality, clean Android experience, wireless charging and distinctive design. However, its aging processor, inconsistent battery efficiency and limited remaining update period mean it should only be purchased at a compelling used or refurbished price.

Who Should Avoid

Buyers who need long remaining software support, strong battery efficiency, fast charging, compact dimensions or dependable high-end gaming performance.

Key Takeaways

  • Camera quality remains a major strength
  • The first-generation Tensor chip enables useful Google features
  • Battery and thermal efficiency are weaker than newer phones
  • The phone is officially discontinued
  • Its value depends heavily on used or refurbished pricing

Buying Recommendation

Consider the Pixel 6 only when it is substantially cheaper than newer supported alternatives and the battery condition is verified. Buyers planning to keep a phone for several years should choose a newer Pixel.

Upgrade Path

Upgrade Path Pixel 8, Pixel 9a or a newer Pixel model for longer support, improved efficiency and better connectivity.

Downgrade Path

Downgrade Path Pixel 6a for a smaller and less expensive Tensor-powered Pixel experience.
