A world reborn
New heroes, familiar DNA
Pros
- Visually breathtaking world-building
- Strong Owen Teague performance-capture debut
- Confident franchise reset without over-relying on nostalgia
- Oscar-nominated VFX and Annie Award-winning animation
Cons
- Doesn't fully match the emotional depth of the Caesar trilogy
- Proximus Caesar is entertaining but underdeveloped as a villain
- Slow-burning pacing in the second act
Verdict A visually spectacular and surprisingly thoughtful franchise reset — Wes Ball builds a rich new world with confident restraint, and Owen Teague's Noa is a worthy heir to Andy Serkis' Caesar.

Timeline
Following the Caesar trilogy's conclusion with War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), 20th Century Studios developed a new chapter set centuries later. Josh Friedman wrote the screenplay based on characters by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and Wes Ball was hired to direct a planned new trilogy.
Shot in Sydney, Australia from October 2022 to February 2023, using the same performance-capture technology tradition of the reboot series. The production used extensive location work to portray a world overgrown with nature reclaiming human ruins.
Premiered at TCL Chinese Theatre on May 2, 2024; wide US release May 10; digital from July 9; physical (4K/Blu-ray/DVD) August 27; streaming on Hulu and Disney+ from August 2, 2024. A sequel was greenlit in October 2024.

Trivia
- The film is set hundreds of years after Caesar's death — far further in the future than any previous entry in the reboot series.
- Owen Teague performed as Noa entirely via performance capture technology — a tradition of the reboot series first established by Andy Serkis as Caesar in 2011.
- Principal photography took place entirely in Sydney, Australia from October 2022 to February 2023.
- Director Wes Ball previously helmed the entire Maze Runner trilogy (2014–2018) — this was his first major studio franchise outside that series.
- Josh Friedman, who wrote the screenplay, also wrote War of the Worlds (2005) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).
- A sequel was officially confirmed in October 2024 by 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell, targeting a 2027 theatrical release with Wes Ball returning.
- It received an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects and won the Annie Award for Best Character Animation in a Live Action Production at the 2025 ceremonies.
Quotes
"Caesar is dead. Long live Proximus Caesar."
"Ape alone — weak. Ape together — strong."
Goofs
- Modern infrastructure seen in certain establishing shots should have crumbled far more extensively given the centuries elapsed since human civilization's fall.
- The position of Mae's bag changes between cuts during the underground vault sequence.
