Disaster setup

The opening aviation disaster provides the movie's strongest sustained sequence. Harlin clearly establishes the aircraft's structural collapse, the passengers' panic and the danger created by the surrounding ocean.

Once the passengers enter the water, the film combines sinking wreckage, limited rescue options and shark attacks. The familiar ingredients are handled with enough momentum to maintain suspense.
